With the global ban on plastics intensifying, eco-friendly tableware made from wheat bran and straw is rapidly gaining traction in the international market. According to Fact.MR data, the global wheat straw tableware market reached $86.5 million in 2025 and is projected to exceed $347 million by 2035, representing a CAGR of 14.9%.
Europe has become the first market to adopt this technology. The Polish brand Biotrem, using wheat bran as its raw material, has an annual production capacity of 15 million pieces, and its products are already available in over 40 countries, including Germany, France, and the UK. At the Stella Polaris music festival in Denmark, its edible plates were creatively used as pizza crusts, and their ability to naturally decompose in 30 days was widely praised. High-end restaurants in Germany and France are even using it as an eco-friendly label, offering unique services such as pairing sweet and savory tableware with their meals.
The North American market is following closely behind, with restaurants in several US states switching to wheat-based tableware due to plastic bans. Products from companies like Dongying Maiwodi in China are exported to 28 countries, have obtained international certifications such as LFGB, and have become suppliers to European and American chain restaurants. These tableware items can withstand temperatures up to 120℃, can be reused more than 10 times, and offer cost-effectiveness comparable to traditional plastics.
“One ton of wheat bran can make 10,000 pieces of tableware, and the raw material cost is 30% lower than that of rice husks,” points out Dawid Wróblewski, project manager at Biotrem. He notes that the wide distribution of wheat-producing regions and its rapid degradation make it the optimal alternative to plastic tableware. Industry insiders predict that the Asia-Pacific region will become the next growth engine, and the increased production capacity in major wheat-producing countries such as China and India will further drive down market prices.
